LSAMP PROGRAM BENEFITS
Approximately twenty (20) students are selected to participate in the LSAMP program each academic year. LSAMP student participants, who are assigned both faculty and student mentors, engage in research (REU) and participate in technical internships, especially during the summer. Participants are provided financial incentives, such as book scholarships, gift cards, and special awards and recognitions, to excel in their studies.
Other benefits to student participants include the following resources and activities: Peer Instructors/Mentors who "tutor" and serve as role models; Undergraduate Peer Assistants who do "Supplemental Instruction;" opportunities for active and collaborative learning; one-to-one tutoring; field trips to private and public sector companies and organizations; research experiences and work opportunities in major related areas; major related course paid for during summer following first year; support for travel to VA-NC LSAMP Program related events and similar professional conferences; receptions and networking events; arranged presentations and/or workshops on academic success skills and/or other areas of needs; establishment of a "buddy system" with "accountability partners;" inclusion in the LSAMP student data base; opportunities to collaborative with faculty and student participants at other VA-NC LSAMP member institutions; and others, depending on suitability to NSF goal attainment and needs of student participants.
