The goal of this paper is to present and evaluate an attempt to bring direction-or-arrival estimation closer to real-time operation without sacrificing too much performance. The idea is to combine three existing techniques: 1) optimal design of sparse arrays, 2) adaptive beamspace processing and 3) virtual array design. The usefulness of the overall algorithm in scenarios of practical interest is discussed.
