Homework Assignment 1
Due September 10, 2009
Reading assignment: INCOSE SE Handbook, Chapters 1-3
Homework must be neat and readable. At the top of every page
you must write your name, the assignment number, and the due
date. Clearly indicate the question you are answering. You do not
need to copy the entire question, but you must mark the question number
and a brief description at the beginning of your answer for each
question. For example, before answering 2a, you might write: 2a. Functions.
- Choose a complex system developed after 1980. Describe the
need it was developed to fill. Describe how this need was
addressed prior to development of the system, and how the system
improved upon the way things were done previously. Briefly
describe the technological advances that were incorporated into the new
system. Describe any problems, if any, that occurred in the
earliest versions of the system, and how these problems were addressed
in later versions.
- Most members of the Mason community make use of the Johnson Center food court.
- State three functions performed by the Johnson Center food court.
What components of the system perform each of these functions?
- Give a step by step description of the process a person follows in purchasing a meal at the food court.
- Describe an interface between the Johnson Center food court and
some other system. What matter and/or information flow across the
interface? Explain how the requirement for this interface affects the
system design.
- If you could improve the Mason food service system, how would
you do it? Describe the difference between the
existing and improved
system from the user's perspective.
