International Science, Tech Firms Value Access to Volgenau

Mason's campuses are located in the heart of "Silicon Valley East," and are a short drive from Washington. The world's top science and technology firms maintain offices in the area due to accessibility to government agencies and research institutions. Volgenau enjoys front-door access to the major players, not just because we're in the neighborhood, but because we're conducting research that's in demand.

Researcher Profile: Celso Ferreira, Water Resources Engineering

Portrait of Volgenau's Celso Ferreira

Celso Ferreira

Celso Ferriera leads a research group investigating the potential to reduce the impact of hurricane flooding to critical infrastructure. The lab is developing engineering theories and solutions that address the affects of climate variability and human-induced environmental changes. Concern about the effects of climate change, sea-level rise, urbanization, and environmental degradation is of primary focus in engineering resilient infrastructure.

Ferriera has written technical presentations related to extreme weather and climate change affects on to civil engineering. He is a technical reviewer for more than 10 scientific journals, and has more than 10 years of experience working in consulting projects related to water resources, environmental and coastal engineering in the US and Brazil. He is also an Associate Researcher at the USGS National Research Program. Selected research grants include those from Johns Hopkins University and the Jeffress Memorial Trust.

He teaches classes on such subjects as Water Resource Engineering and Coastal Flood Hazards.

Departments Active in Research with a Global Impact

Bioengineering

The Department of Bioengineering collaborates closely with national laboratories and medical facilities in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, including the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Children’s National Medical Center, the Food and Drug Administration, and INOVA hospitals. Through the efforts of our faculty and students, we seek national recognition in bioengineering research and education.

The Sid and Reva Dewberry Department of Civil, Environmental, and Infrastructure Engineering

The CEIE Department attracts and educates Virginia’s best-performing students, as well as national and international undergraduate and graduate students. Our students are opportunity seekers who are prepared to develop and implement innovative and successful solutions to today’s complex and multi-disciplinary engineering challenges.
