Computer Science Grads See Strong Earning Potential

Computer science majors should get an extra boost from a Payscale.com survey that puts the George Mason University in the top quarter for graduates earning the highest salaries nationwide.

Based on the survey, a George Mason grad with a computer science degree can expect to earn $59,700 for an early career salary and $110,300 in mid-career. Payscale's methodology defines early career as one to five years of experience and mid-career as 10 years of experience.

The school's rank of 38 out of 161 puts it in the top quarter of schools represented. Stanford led the list with an early career salary of $97,100 and a mid-career salary of $146,200. Virginia Tech was ranked 11, while VCU came in at 112. The salaries are based on graduates with bachelor's degrees and no advanced degrees.

Mason's Volgenau School of Engineering offers 10 educational programs, including a BS, MS, and PhD in computer science. In addition to the Payscale ranking, the school is ranked sixth nationally for return on investment by Affordable Colleges Online and was named the 12th best graduate program by GraduatePrograms.com.
