Oscar Barton, Jr., is the Department of Mechanical Engineering Chair at the Volgeneau School. Barton joined the faculty of George Mason University in the fall semester of 2014 after completing a 22-year career at the United States Naval Academy, where he was one of only three African Americans to obtain the rank of tenured full professor and the first within the academy’s Division of Engineering and Weapons. As the department Chairman, he is proud to have work with a committed faculty that oversaw the accreditation of two engineering programs and the creation of the Nuclear Engineering program, the first in the history of the U.S. Naval Academy. His research focuses on the analysis of dynamic systems, closed-form solutions for linear self-adjoint systems, and systems that govern the responses of composite structures. Dr. Barton is actively involved in curriculum development and program assessment. He is the past chair of ASME Committee on Engineering Accreditation and served as a member of ASME Mechanical Engineering Department Head Executive Committee (MEDHEC). He currently serves as the Division Chair of ASEE Military and Veterans Constituent Committee, is a Commissioner for Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, Inc., and has been a program evaluator for six years before joining the commission. Barton holds a Professional Engineering (PE) license in the state of Maryland.
