Biography

Ramin Bighamian is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at George Mason University. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park. Prior to joining Mason, he was a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Southern California, Department of Electrical Engineering.

Here at Mason, Bighamian is the director of the Algorithms in Medicine and Neuro-Technology Lab (AIMAN Lab) that pursues fundamental breakthroughs in biomedical cyber-physical systems. The lab’s primary research focuses on application of mathematical modeling, controls and estimation theory, and machine learning in health information technology including decision support and automated care systems, with the intention of improving the quality of healthcare, as well as brain-computer interfaces to bring neuro-enhancements to the daily consumer.

Bighamian has received various awards including the Best Dissertation award 2018 from Department of Mechanical Engineering as well as Graduate Dean’s Dissertation Fellowship 2016-17 both at the University of Maryland, College Park. He was also a recipient of the Best Student Paper Award at ASME-DSCC 2015, and named a fellow of Future Faculty Program in the Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland. His research on controlling the cardiovascular state was sponsored by the biomedical company Nihon Kohden for both domestic and international patent filing.
